The Father Effect

I don't usually blog twice in a day - I don't usually have time, or even the inspiration to do so. Today though is different. I recently came across a short film titled The Father Effect via Twitter and have been meaning to watch it for a week now. I finally got around to viewing it and devoting my full attention to it today. It can be found on YouTube (click me) and it has it's own website at TheFatherEffectMovie.com. It takes 15 minutes to watch it and it really does need to be seen. It's powerful!

I think everyone can benefit from watching this tremendously put together footage. Whether you're a Mother or a Father or not doesn't even matter - it's that good, it just needs to be seen. My son hasn't yet arrived in the world, but he will do in 2 short months and this movie has already put my mind into overdrive. I vow to be the best person I can be for the good of my wife, and for the good of my child. A Father is a vital cog in the Family machine and a role that shouldn't be taken on lightly. This movie shows that we can learn from ourselves, our mistakes and our own experiences. It shows we can learn from the mistakes of people we know or have seen. It shows that we can better ourselves.

I won't spoil the show for you, but it takes the experiences of others as Fathers or from their own Fathers and talks about what is needed to succeed - or more, what was missing to make them fail. If I take nothing else from my viewing experience it will be that the most important thing you can give to a child is time.

Being a Father is the most privileged and important role that any man can ever take on. I can speak for myself only, but I intend to treat that role with all of the respect and hard work that it deserves.

If you haven't yet watched The Father Effect, then force free a 15 minute slot in your schedule and do so! It inspired me to open a new browser and type without even thinking much for 3 or 4 minutes and just hitting send on this blog! Watch it. You will not be disappointed.

First Family. New Emotions.

Expecting your first child is an emotional time – all of the time! It’s wonderful, miraculous, exciting, amazing, proud... scary, fearful, anxiety-inducing. You’ve known other people babies, you’ve scoured the internet and read book after book, but you still feel like you have no clue what to expect or what to do.

(Yes...I know, Diana isn't blonde!)

I plan on diving into the adventure headfirst, and with an open mind. I know that there will be both successes, failures, and plenty of unpredictable bumps along the road known as parenthood. It’s not always easy, but I’m trying to not even attempt to predict what those bumps could be. I don’t want to over worry.

(Bumps in the road known as parenthood...looks enjoyable though.)

The difficult emotion to keep at bay I find though is paranoia. As parenthood gets closer and closer, so does the realisation that someone else’s life will rely entirely on me and my partner. ME? And my partner? I’m about as reliable as an email from the Ugandan lottery and as useful as a chocolate teapot, so I’m praying that my wife’s shoulders are big! Not only is it your ability that you question, but what happens when you’re not around at all? I’ve never even seriously thought about what might happen if I were to die before. I don’t even have life insurance! Perhaps I should add that to the list of tasks to complete before baby arrives...!

Will our relationship be the same? Will I lose myself? Will my child arrive safely and perfect? Will we have enough money? Will I have to grow up? Like all the way up? Wait... I just said I wasn’t going to over worry. Time to pull the plug on this computer!
