Why Dr. Seuss Will Never Leave Our Reading Shelf

31/03/2015 00:33

I don't know if it was a UK thing, or if it was just a me thing but I was late to the party as far as Dr.Seuss was concerned. In fact, I don't recall reading any of his works until I had become a parent myself. I may still not have read any had it not been for my American wife either. Now I've discovered them though, they'll never leave our reading shelf. This man was way ahead of his time and a genius in his own right. This man was everything that I love about the English language! His works are unique, timeless and appeal to all ages.

Dr Seuss books

Clayton still isn't 2 years old but he loves the musical sound to the rhyming fiction. An older child must love the silly illustrations and even sillier storylines. Young adults can marvel at the mix of both real and nonsense words, whilst learning from the morals that pull each story together. He made language fun! It doesn't stop there either, because even at my older age I love all of his books. They're genuinely both fun and tongue twistingly challenging to read; which makes a change from a lot of the simple books we read over and over with our children. We've been making our way through Dr. Seuss' entire collection and I could list you quotables for days, but here are a few of my favourites...followed by a video of some nonsensical counting by our own little Dr. Seuss lover.

"Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive that is you-er than you!"

"Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is gong to get better. It's not."

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to a child."

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."

"Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?"

"So be sure when you step. Step with great care and great tact. And remember that life's a great balancing act!"

Subject: uncanny coincidence!

Can't believe I am reading a post about Dr Seuss just hours after I wrote a poem inspired by his books. I have yet to read all of them, but am getting there slowly.
